Where earth meets elegance: My ultimate Ulaman Experience

Tucked deep in Bali’s lush jungle, Ulaman Eco Retreat completely redefined what luxury means to me. Think bamboo villas, waterfall-fed pools, a stunning domed spa nestled beside a tranquil river, organic meals crafted from locally sourced ingredients, and soul-nourishing wellness rituals like yoga and sound baths. This wasn’t just a resort stay, it was a statement.

“Ulaman was the perfect backdrop to showcase that sustainability and luxury can absolutely coexist.”

Every inch of Ulaman is intentional, thoughtfully designed with sustainability at its core. From bamboo and recycled timber to rammed earth and even repurposed Styrofoam, the entire resort is powered by nature and built in harmony with the Earth. And yet, it’s somehow still impossibly chic. I’ve never felt more aligned…..…or grounded.

Afternoons were peaceful, thought provoking, yet carefree. Lounging in a bikini on bamboo bridges one moment, draped in flowing resort wear the next. Ulaman was the perfect backdrop to showcase that sustainability and luxury can absolutely coexist. Lately, I’ve become more conscious of our collective carbon footprint and how we can reduce waste through mindful choices, whether in how we travel, what we consume, or what we wear. It’s time we return to the basics, honoring what we take from the Earth and recognizing how little we really need.

What I admired most about Ulaman eco retreat is their unwavering commitment to eco-conscious living. It’s been part of their ethos since the beginning. Their now-iconic bamboo architecture, curved roofs and domed structures, feels like something out of Avatar or FernGully. Ethereal, otherworldly, yet deeply grounded in nature. You don’t just stay here, you become one with the surroundings.

Ulaman Eco Luxury Retreat is located in the village of  Tabanan, approximately 20 minutes from the vibrant town of Canggu . The resort is accessible via a scenic drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport, which takes about 45 minutes. Transportation can be arranged through the resort or local taxi services and is very inexpensive.

Bali’s tropical climate makes Ulaman a year round destination. However, the dry season, from April to October, offers the most pleasant weather for outdoor activities and exploration. The wet season, from November to March, brings lush landscapes and fewer tourists, providing a more secluded experience.

Now let’s get to my personal experience here. Upon arrival, I was welcomed with a warm towel and a refreshing drink in their earthy bamboo lobby. I checked into my first room, a charming garden villa complete with its own backyard and plunge pool. It was the perfect setting to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature. A hot shower, a nourishing dinner, and I was instantly at ease.

“That peaceful spot was, without a doubt, my favorite part of the entire stay. It brought me into the deepest state of calm I’ve felt in ages.”

The culinary experience blew me away. Locally grown ingredients, vibrant presentations, and cocktails crafted with just as much care. I dined at the “Waterfall Lotus,” a beehive-inspired restaurant that, like every building on site, had its own unique name and story. Even the rooms are named after the natural materials they’re built from. My first night was in Jati, a garden villa room, Jati, which means teak, as in teak wood. It’s a common wood used in the region and at Ulaman. I loved how intentional every detail felt.

Each morning, I greeted the jungle before the sun. I’d record nature’s sounds, breathe it all in, and wait for the world to slowly wake up. I worked out in their gym with sweeping green views, then had breakfast at Earth restaurant by the pool. The menu was abundant and creative, and even with GF options for me! Each morning somehow topping the last. One highlight was a floating breakfast, a signature Bali experience. There’s something so indulgent about sipping tea and nibbling on fresh fruit while relaxing in a pool.

That morning, I wore a bikini made from recycled plastic , something that felt especially meaningful in this setting. I tried to curate most of my wardrobe for this trip around sustainable fashion, cruelty-free, ethically made, and recycled wherever possible. It’s not always easy, but there was no better place than Ulaman to make the effort. It felt good to give back to nature while enjoying it. DM me for any ideas on recycle based and sustainable fashion brands.

On my second night, I upgraded to a Cocoon Room, and wow, it was unlike anything I’ve ever stayed in. Constructed from recycled bamboo and teak, it featured a dreamy main room and the most stunning bathroom with a sculptural teak bathtub, perfect for a flower bath. And yes, it was every bit as magical as it sounds. The care and artistry that went into the florals and presentation made it unforgettable. It was hard getting into the tub as I didn’t want to destroy their carefully crafted beautiful heart design. I made sure to be careful for as long as possible while still enjoying the bath.

Ulaman is where sustainability meets luxury, where Earth meets elegance. I feel incredibly grateful to have discovered such a soul-nourishing escape.”

The spa? On another level. Dome-shaped, warm-toned, and serene. It was a sanctuary within a sanctuary. But what truly stole my heart were the netted oval hammocks suspended over the river. I spent time lying there, relaxing to the sound of rushing water below. That peaceful spot was, without a doubt, my favorite part of the entire stay. It brought me into the deepest state of calm I’ve felt in ages. I even recorded the sound to bring home with me for when I feel anxiety or need re-alignment with nature in my ever bustling big city of Los Angeles.

The sauna and steam rooms were equally beautiful and perfectly aligned with the natural aesthetic. There were two large plunge pools as well, one cold and one warm. I couldn’t bring myself to get into the cold but I do know the benefits of a cold plunge on the body. I genuinely believe this was one of the most unique spa experiences I’ve had anywhere in the world. Since returning to LA, I’ve caught myself daydreaming about it more than once and I know I’ll be back.

Evenings were pure magic. Twilight wrapped the resort in a romantic glow, and I found myself wandering the grounds just to take it all in. While I didn’t do one of the private romantic dinners offered, I watched the staff prepare them for other couples and was so touched by the detail and effort. Whether set in a tucked away structure or down by the river, it looked like something out of a fairytale. If you’re traveling with a partner, this is a must. I know my day will come to do one of these beautiful, romantic, and intricate flower dinners.

If you care about nature, appreciate intentional architecture, and want to leave a lighter footprint while still treating yourself, this place is it. Ulaman is where sustainability meets luxury, where Earth meets elegance. I feel incredibly grateful to have discovered such a soul-nourishing escape.
